Dear Residents,
Respecting Southborough Common and Wildlife Concerns at Holden Pond
Southborough Common is a treasured 75-acre green space at the heart of our town and an important part of what makes Southborough such a special place to live.
It provides a valuable area for residents to enjoy nature, exercise, walk their dogs, spend time with family and friends, and take a break from the demands of daily life.
We are incredibly fortunate to have such a large and accessible open space on our doorstep. As our communities become busier and more developed, places like Southborough Common become even more important for physical wellbeing, mental health and the enjoyment of future generations.
Recently, concerns have been raised by residents regarding damage to parts of the Common, litter being left behind, small fires being lit, and loud music being played.
For many years, young people have ridden bicycles in certain areas of the Common and, in most cases, this has taken place without issue.
I appreciate that this can be a contentious topic, with strongly held views on all sides. However, it is important to recognise that people simply riding bicycles on the Common are not, in themselves, causing harm or committing any offence.
It is equally important that we do not fall into the trap of assuming that everyone who rides a bicycle on the Common is responsible for the anti-social behaviour that has recently been reported. The vast majority of those using the Common do so respectfully and responsibly. The concerns raised relate to specific behaviours, not to any particular group of people.
What is unacceptable is behaviour that damages the Common or negatively affects others. Deliberately digging up areas of land, leaving rubbish behind, lighting fires, or engaging in behaviour that causes nuisance.
Southborough Common is an area of significant community value, and we all have a responsibility to care for it and preserve it for future generations.
Over the past few weeks, I have attended the Common on several occasions and spoken directly with a number of the young people who regularly ride there. These conversations have been positive and constructive, and I would like to thank them for the respectful and mature manner in which they have engaged with me.
I would encourage everyone who uses the Common, regardless of age, to take pride in looking after it. By showing consideration for others and respecting the environment, we can ensure that Southborough Common remains a safe, welcoming and enjoyable place for everyone.
Sadly I have also received reports concerning the welfare of wildlife at Holden Pond, including allegations of cruelty towards wildlife and incidents involving fishing in an area where fishing is not permitted.
Holden Pond is an important local habitat, and I would ask all visitors to respect the environment, the wildlife that depends upon it and any restrictions that are in place. Anyone witnessing acts of cruelty towards wildlife or other concerning behaviour is encouraged to report the matter to a the Environment Agency hotline 0800 80 70 60.
Thank you to all those who continue to care for and respect these important community assets. Working together, we can help protect and preserve them for years to come.
Recovered yellow E-Bike – Can You Help Identify the Owner?
Officers recently recovered a yellow e-bike following information suggesting it may have been stolen from the Southborough area.
Despite carrying out enquiries, reviewing crime reports and checking local community groups, we have not yet identified an owner or located a corresponding theft report.
If you have recently had an e-bike stolen, or you recognise a recovered bike that may belong to you or someone you know, please get in touch via 101.
Any photographs, serial numbers, receipts or proof of ownership would assist us in reuniting the bike with its rightful owner and may help progress further enquiries.
Drop in Surgery at Tesco Express
Finally - Thank you to everyone who attended the community drop-in surgery at Tesco Express on 16th August.
These events provide a valuable opportunity for residents to raise concerns, ask questions and discuss local issues with their neighbourhood policing team.
It was great to meet those who attended, and I look forward to seeing more residents at future events.
As always, thank you for your continued support.
